CITIES FOR ACTION STATEMENT ON TITLE 42 TERMINATION

Cities for Action applauds CDC decision to fully terminate Title 42 policy and Urges Biden Administration to Uphold the Right to Asylum

"Cities for Action applauds the CDC’s decision to fully end Title 42 expulsions by May 23rd. For two years, we witnessed scores of migrants be denied the right to seek asylum and expelled under the pretext of a restrictive policy that health experts across the country declared had no scientific basis as a public health measure. This same policy has had a disproportionate impact on Black and brown migrants, with tens of thousands being sent back to persecution, torture, sexual assault, kidnapping and murder. The continued use of Title 42 to expel vulnerable migrants at our southern borders, including families with young children, is not aligned with our country’s values or asylum laws. Now, with the policy coming to an end soon, we recognize that the conversation cannot end here. The Biden Administration has an opportunity to reaffirm its commitment once again to pursue a fair, orderly, and humane immigration system by upholding our values as a nation of immigrants and protecting the most vulnerable populations seeking safety in the United States. Two steps the Administration can take to achieve this outcome are to rebuild our asylum system and to ensure due process for asylum seekers subject to removal proceedings."
